SDCC '15: Halo 5's Story 'Has Layers' And Should Be Taken 'Slow'

Halo5_KeyArt_Horiz_FinalDespite popular consensus, I think the story of Halo 4 was by far the best the series has ever produced, at least in video game form. I think 343 are taking the narrative in incredibly interesting places, and I seriously hope Halo 5 builds on that good work.

Speaking at a panel today down in San Diego, narrative designer on the game Morgan Lockhart talked about how that story is currently being structured and it sounds interesting. She encourages fans to take their time with the game to experience it fully and understand the full depth of the game.

If you like our story, you'll definitely want to take this one slow. You won't want to rush through it.

We definitely approached this story as a story of layers. So there's the high level that you're always going to see that's going to be the driving story that you need to understand to appreciate the game. But then there's a lot of narrative that you won't find if you rush through it. But if you take it slow and look and explore, you're going to find all these rich character and world details.

To be honest, I am a little worried. If I did have a complaint, this was one of the failings of Halo 4. A lot of the lore was wrapped up on ancillary media so it could make the game a little indecipherable at times if you didn't engage with it.

At least this time it seems all the story seems to be in game. I hope this will act more like the voice recordings in Bioshock that build the universe, rather than tertiary content that Halo can get bogged down in that ignores important backstory of characters.

Thanks for the heads up GameSpot!
