Fantomex Gets the Giant-Size X-Men Treatment in May from Jonathan Hickman and Rod Reis

Marvel has announced the next character who will star in a Giant-Size X-Men comic, part of a series of X-Books designed to showcase characters and artists while simultaneously providing Marvel with an excuse to put the number "one" on each issue of a series of comics and charge five dollars a piece.

In May, Marvel will publish Giant-Size X-Men: Fantomex #1, written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Rod Reis. A press release on Marvel.com claims the book was first revealed in an "interview" at the A.V. Club, but their article actually contains just a single prefabricated quote from Reis that was provided to the compliant Marvel media partner as part of an EX-X-XVLUSIVE press release opportunity, not the answer to a question asked in an interview context. Eisner-worthy access journalism.

Here's what Reis had to say:

As Jonathan Hickman and I were talking about characters for this Giant-Size X-Men issue, I said I was looking for crazy and weird characters that would allow me to play with panel layouts and do crazy stuff. So we decided that Fantomex would be the perfect choice. I loved what we did with New Mutants. I had so much fun working with those characters and people can expect this book to be a lot of fun too.

Fantomex was last seen during the pre-HoXPoX Astonishing X-Men series, where he sacrificed his body so that Charles Xavier could return from the astral plane while Fantomex remained trapped there. The solicit doesn't mention anything about any of that because current X-architect Hickman has shown open contempt for recent X-Men stories preceding his reboot and has largely ignored them during HoXPoX and Dawn of X, with a few exceptions. So who knows whether of any that happened, or whether it even matters.

Check out the solicit and cover below.

The hit creative team of Jonathan Hickman & Rod Reis (NEW MUTANTS) turn their attention to the covert activities of the Weapon Plus program's Weapon XIII! A bred killer who chose the life of a gentleman super-thief, Fantomex has always defied expectations… For example, who would expect him to break into the World, the artificial realm of his creation? And then again? And then… again?
