Chris Claremont Hailed as a Visionary in New Marvel TPB… So Why Won’t They Let Him Write a Series Today?

Chris Claremont is the greatest comic book writer, maybe the greatest writer period, of all time. This is an objective fact that can’t be argued. And as revealed in Marvel’s full 2019 solicitations, Claremont will be honored with a new Marvel Visionaries: Chris Claremont trade paperback in November, reprinting some his classic stories with legendary artists from the X-Men universe and beyond.

In Marvel’s own words:

Celebrate the career of a true Marvel Visionary! Best known for transforming the X-Men from a reprint title into a blockbuster franchise, Chris Claremont steered the fates of Marvel’s mutants for decades while working with some of comics’ top artists!

Chris Claremont is currently paid by Marvel to remain a Marvel-exclusive writer. But since 2014’s Nightcrawler series, Claremont hasn’t written an ongoing or mini, only short stories in one-shots or anthologies, and, according to Claremont, not even that many of those.

So why, if Claremont is a “true Marvel Visionary,” and if he is under an exclusive contract with Marvel, wouldn’t Marvel use him to write more comics, telling a story that lasts longer than issue? It’s a question for which we’ve never been able to get a sensible answer, so it’s one we’re compelled to keep asking.

But we’ll definitely be picking up this trade paperback in November.

About Jude Terror

A prophecy says that in the comic book industry's darkest days, a hero will come to lead the people through a plague of overpriced floppies, incentive variant covers, #1 issue reboots, and super-mega-crossover events.

Scourge of Rich Johnston, maker of puns, and seeker of the Snyder Cut, Jude Terror, sadly, is not the hero comics needs right now... but he's the one the industry deserves.
