Marvel to Reprint 1981's Star Wars #50 with Original Ads in May

Marvel Comics has announced plans to publish Star Wars Original Marvel Years #50 Facsimile, a complete reproduction of the original issue first printed back in 1981. Why publish a recreation of this 40-year-old comic now, besides the obviously attractive reason of getting to charge $3.99 for something that originally cost 75 cents? Well, according to a press release, the reprint of Star Wars #50 coincides with May's Star Wars #108 one-shot from Matthew Rosenberg, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Luke Ross, Kerry Gammill, and Andrea Broccardo, as Star Wars #108 will be a direct sequel to Star Wars #50.

Wait, what?

What about Star Wars #107, the last issue of Marvel's original Star Wars run published in 1986? Well, Marvel was already planning to reprint that in May, and that's still happening, but apparently Rosenberg's Star Wars #108, though numbered after Star Wars #107, actually fits after Star Wars #50. So why not call it Star Wars #51? Well, there's already a Star Wars #51. Aaaggghhhh!

Look, just don't think too hard about it. Not even Yoda could make sense of Marvel's legacy numbering. Trying to make sense of Marvel's legacy numbering leads to fear, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to… uh… YouTube? Though this does raise the question: does this issue then effectively retcon Star Wars #51-107?

Sigh.

Just check out the press release below.

New York, NY—March 15, 2019—In celebration of Marvel's 80th Anniversary, Marvel is releasing a special Facsimile edition of the 1977 STAR WARS #50! Coinciding directly with May's upcoming STAR WARS #108 one-shot from Matthew Rosenberg and artists Giuseppe Camuncoli, Luke Ross, Kerry Gammill, Andrea Broccardo, this Facsimile features a full reprint of the issues' classic story – ads and all! – from writer Archie Williams and artists Al Williamson, Tom Palmer and Walter Simonson!

With new stories of original series characters such as Jaxxon, Amaiza, Domina Tagge, Valance the Hunter, and more, STAR WARS #108 acts as a direct sequel to Star Wars #50 – making this a truly epic 80th Anniversary celebration!

"So many true comic legends worked on those books- Archie Goodwin, Roy Thomas, Walt Simonson, Howard Chaykin, Al Williamson, David Michelinie, Klaus Janson, Jo Duffy, and so many more. It's pretty overwhelming to think about, actually. What they made was the product of a very different time in comics, and it's something modern audiences aren't really accustomed to. So while it would be fun, if a little humbling, to try and just impersonate them, we wanted to do something a bit different, something that would appeal to classic and modern fans alike," Matt Rosenberg told Comicbook.com of writing STAR WARS #108.

Relive the dazzling legends of long ago and a galaxy far, far away in Marvel's original Star Wars series with STAR WARS #50, and this May, get ready to dive into all new adventures of your favorite characters when STAR WARS #108 hits comic shops!
