In Goodbye Post for X-Men Red, Tom Taylor Says He Could Have Written Series for Years

In a bittersweet farewell that will surely leave fans wishing for an alternate universe in which the X-Men line wasn't relaunched, X-Men Red writer Tom Taylor revealed that he could have written the fan-favorite series "for years" if it hadn't been canceled to make way for the return of Uncanny X-Men.

"I'm truly sorry to see X-Men: Red come to an end," Taylor wrote on Facebook. "I could have happily written Jean and her team for years, but it wasn't to be, and I've had a great 3+ years in the X-office."

Taylor also expressed hope for his legacy on the X-books in the form of Honey Badger, who has quickly ascended to be one of the top three Wolverines in the Marvel Universe for most fans (the others are Jonathan, an actual Wolverine, and Li'l Wolvie from the Exiles series — the original Wolverine comes in dead last).

"It's especially hard to have to say goodbye to Laura and Gabby,"  Taylor said. "I'm not sure if Gabby has a future at Marvel, but I truly hope so – and not just because I co-created her with David López. I know she's meant a lot to a lot of people."

Unfortunately, the current crop of X-book writers have already begun discussing killing the character off.

Though X-Men Red's final issue is in stores today, readers can still enjoy Taylor's work, both in killing off the DC Universe and also at Marvel, where Taylor will be launching Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man with Juann Cabal in January.

"Thank you so much to everyone who picked up our books and went on this journey with us," Taylor concluded. "And please join us as we go from 'Snikt' and 'Bamf' to 'Thwip' – with Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man in January."
