Marvel Comics Hires Jaime Hernandez For ‘Ms America Chavez’ Origin

As part of Marvel Legacy, all sorts of Marvel Comics titles are getting narrative refreshes. America, the series by Gabby Rivera and Joe Quinines continues, with the addition of a new origin, never before told, with a number of contributing artists including Annie Wu, Jen Bartel and Jaime Hernandez.

That is an unexpected addition to the castlist. Co-creator of the immensely important and impactful Love And Rockets, Jaime’s Big Two work is extremely limited. A page in Transmetropolitan, in Tom Strong, Strange Tales and World’s Funnest is about it.

Jaime’s main contribution to Love and Rockets was the ongoing serial narrative Locas which follows the tangled lives of a group of primarily Latina characters, from their teenage years in the early days of the California punk scene to the present day. The two central characters of Jaime’s cast are Margarita Luisa “Maggie” Chascarrillo and Esperanza Leticia “Hopey” Glass, whose on-again, off-again, open romance is a focus for many Locas storylines. The entirety of which was collected into one 700 page graphic novel in 2004.

As well as helping to tell Ms America Chavez’ “never-before-told origin story” Hernandez will be working on a present-day storyline as well.

America Chavez faces her biggest threat yet: Exterminatrix! As the Midas Corporation invades every corner of America’s new life, she’ll have to learn some new tricks to take them down—with help from family she didn’t even know she had!

Hence that origin story, I guess.
