Nintendo's Online Service For The Switch Is Delayed But Will Only Cost $20/Year
It's been a while since we last heard about Nintendo's new online service that was supposed to hit with the Nintendo Switch console in March. While the service was originally slated to release in the Fall of 2017, there was going to be an early access period in March. The latest details however have the service launching in 2018. No set period of 2018 is mentioned either, which is somewhat disappointing, though it will likely be in the early half of the year, but at least we can console our selves with the fact that it will only set us back $20 a year.
Yep, unlike Playstation and Xbox, the Nintendo Switch Online service will cost us a third of the price.
As reported by Kotaku earlier this evening, you can also get a one-month subscription for $4 and a three-month subscription for $8.
Voice chat and online lobby features won't be available on the Switch, but rather through a smartphone app that will launch this summer. "Our new dedicated smart device app will connect to Nintendo Switch and let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games─all from your smart device," the company says. "A free, limited version of this app will be available for download in summer 2017."
Nintendo added that subscribers will also get free versions of some classic Nintendo games with added online features, specifically mentioning Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario as examples. Previously, Nintendo had said that subscribers will get access to a different game each month, but Nintendo confirmed to Kotaku that "Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will have ongoing access to a library of classic games with added online play. Users can play as many of the games as they want, as often as they like, as long as they have an active subscription." Rather than getting a free game or two per month, the way Xbox Live Gold subscribers and PlayStation Plus subscribers do.
Nintendo's plans for their classic games and the Virtual Console still remain a bit of a mystery, with the company refusing to comment on the Virtual Console at this time.
