I think the term ‘always online’ has a bit of an unfair wrap. The term makes a lot of people recoil, either because it means forced multiplayer or that it’s a way for corporations to control your content. At the same time, I think it can be used quite artistically and functionally to improve a game. Destiny for example is a better game for it.
That’s why I don’t feel anything necessarily for the news that the new Need For Speed will be always online. In a series of tweets by the franchise, it was revealed the required internet connection to play the game. The Tweet said:
@NeedforSpeed: @DeanRheims NFS will require an online connection, but the benefits are nice. More variety and a more rewarding experience with friends.
As I said, we have no context for play here, so it’s impossible to know what this really means. I assume it will have some kind of passive server matching, much like Destiny has, where you can drive along in different areas and see others in the world with you. I’m sure we will get more light shed on this at E3.
