"We're Living In A Charmed And Strange Time…" – Joshua Hale Fialkov Talks The Devilers

Devilers01-Cove-JockWith yesterday's release of The Devilers #1 and the announced sell-out, it seemed like a good time to touch base with writer Joshua Hale Fialkov about all the hype the series has been getting.

BLEEDING COOL: Joshua – let's look at the sales. The 1st issue is out, and it sold out in one day at Diamond. What does that mean to you and how does that feel?

JOSHUA HALE FIALKOV: It feels great. I'm always thrilled to know something I worked on is in demand… BUT, it also means that demand has outstripped orders. We've all seen this a lot the past few years, including with my own book THE BUNKER. We're living in a charmed and strange time where original properties are building audiences.

BC: This is a book that's been in the works for quite a bit. It was announced at New York Comic Con in 2012 if memory serves. It's taken a while to come out. Why is that?

Devilers01-05_CMYKJHF: Just timing mostly. We wanted to get far enough ahead that it wouldn't bea deadline issue, and, I've been hellaciously busy the past couple years. But, like all good things, it came in it's time, and it's time was clearly right.

BC: You've gotten a great deal of retailer support on this project including Jet Pack Comics, Newcastle Comics and DCBS all aggressively showing their belief in the series. How does that feel to get that kind of attention?

JHF: I've been doing this for so long now, that building those relationships and that faith from retailers is really heartening. It makes me feel so damn good to know that i have such great friends and fans in the community. I owe everything to their support.

BC: Tell us about Matt Triano's art on the series.

Devilers01-07_CMYKJHF: What a discovery, right? Matt's a tremendous talent, and a lot of the great things people have been saying about the book are on his back and his hard work. His amazing imagination is just pouring out all over all of the pages. Matt's going to be doing amazing things in this industry. Guaranteed.

BC: Jock is doing your covers. What did you think of his concept and design for issue one?

JHF: Simply beautiful. Nick and the team at Dynamite put together a stellar team from Matt and Jock to Simon and Mark on Letters and Colors. And, I should add, the book just gets better from here.

BC: Why not take this series to Image? Why Dynamite?

JHF: It was the other way around, Dynamite came to me with the raw idea behind the book and we worked together to shape it into what you see today. They're doing such cool stuff, it's a pleasure to be a part of it.

BC: Let's take a question away from Devilers. Bunker and many of your other titles keep getting attention. To what do you credit that to?

Devilers01-15_CMYK_CRXJHF: I wish I knew. I've been working my butt off for a long time, and I guess things are finally just clicking. I'd like to think it's because I care so much about characters, but, again, I have no idea, really.

BC: What upcoming projects would you like to talk about?

JHF: Well, let's see, I think you guys have covered BUNKER (the first TPB in stores the first week of August) and THE LIFE AFTER (issue 1 in stores now!) to the point of driving your message boards insane, so, how about we say PUNKS THE COMIC with Kody Chamberlain coming from IMAGE in October, and in Previews now. Plus, the continuation of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: WHO AM I? INFINITE, from Marvel in the next few weeks.
