MarvelLeaks Part 2: A Second Major Spoiler From Inside Marvel This Week?

2010 marked a bit of a turning point for the major publishers in terms of how they use the net — both Marvel and DC now routinely break major news through their own sites in addition to placing the occasional exclusive to outlets both inside and outside the industry. The Fear news event from Midtown Comics at the end of last year saw Marvel make an attempt at live streaming coverage the likes of which Apple has been using so succesfully in recent times.

And then there's the Fantastic Four #587 leak to the AP, which hit in the early hours this past Tuesday causing an unavoidable barrage of headline spoilers in the twitterstreams and newsreaders of countless comic fans. They'll learn from that one eventually, I'm sure.

But maybe not quite yet.

Rocketing around the comic news ecosytem right now is the assertion that Marvel let another major tidbit slip in a conference call earlier today. Both iFanboy and MTVGeek are characterizing the spoilage over Marvel's major Venom event as an accident, but one has to wonder if this is just another leak or if Marvel Labs is developing methods of releasing viruses into the wild.

From iFanboy: In a rare occurance today, Marvel accidentally let the identity of the new Venom slip during a conference call with series writer Rick Remender and editor Steve Wacker. The new Venom series is an ongoing series set to launch in March, with story by Remender and art by Tony Moore (Fear Agent, Walking Dead, Punisher). The new identity of Venom has been kept a secret, promised to be revealed in the upcoming Spider-Man Point One issue in Amazing Spider-Man #654.1, with only the new costume design revealed and the high concept that Venom is now being utilized as a government operative.
