“His Dark Materials” S01, EP03: Uncovering Secrets with “Spies” (Preview)

The intrigue and mystery behind BBC and HBO’s joint production of His Dark Materials hit a very tense pitch in episode 2, The Idea of North. Lyra (Dafne Keen) has uncovered a few startling secrets about her new guardian, Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson), that threaten her search for her missing friend, Roger (Lewin Lloyd).

The Gyptians also came very close to finding the missing children, who have been abducted by The Gobblers for a nefarious project that just happens to coincide with Lyra’s interests. If the series continues to follow Phillip Pullman’s first book in the series, the two parties should be colliding with the next episode of the His Dark Materials, simply titled Spies. Here’s a preview of the next episode, courtesy of HBO:

I am really enjoying that the creative team behind His Dark Materials decided to bring Lord Boreal (Ariyon Bakare) out of the shadows for the first season. He’s a pivotal character in the books, but doesn’t really come into play until the second volume. Bakare is far too good in this role to keep him relegated to the background until a second season.

It also looks like the Magisterium is going to be cracking down on both Jordan College and the Gyptian rescue team, which could have cataclysmic effects for everyone involved!

The next episode of His Dark Materials, Spies, will air on BBC on Sunday, November 17th, and HBO on Monday, November 18th. So far, I have really liked everything that I’ve seen. The cast is really good, and the pacing of the series takes full advantage of having a full season to tell the story.
