Steve Zahn Escapes "Planet of the Apes" for "Gringa"

Steve Zahn isn't monkeying around anymore. According to Deadline, the War for the Planet of the Apes actor has signed on to star in Gringa, which will be a father/daughter coming of age dramatic comedy. The film will be directed by E.J. Foerster, who will be taking the Big Chair for the first time. Foerster previously worked as a second unit director on The Greatest Showman, Godzilla, and those sparkly vampire movies. You know which ones.

Shooting begins on Gringa this fall. Clear Horizon will be handling worldwide sales on the film.

The script for Gringa was written by Patrick Hasburgh, with the film being produced by Foerster, Marny Eng, Jeff G. Waxman, Eric Heyadt, and Clear Horizon's David Brown. Brown previously worked on the Sundance film After The Wedding, which starred Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams, and Billy Crudup.

Zahn has had a pretty extensive career. Prior to Gringa, the 51 year old actor appeared as Sammy in Ben Stiller's 1994 film, Reality Bites. He also starred in Crimson Tide as William Barnes in 1995, played Lenny Haise in Tom Hanks' 1996 film That Thing You Do!, and played Al Giordino in Sahara in 2005. Zahn also played Frank Heffley in all of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies before moving on to provide the voice and motion capture work of a bad ape in 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes.

E.J. Foerster has had a lot of work as a second-unit director, going all the way back to True Lies in 1994. Other projects include Deep Impact (1998), The X-Files (1998), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), Tropic Thunder (2008), and Death Wish (2019). He also worked as a stunt coordinator on The Crazies (2010), Hot Pursuit (2015), Death Wish (2018), and Vice (2018).

We don't have many details on the Gringa movie yet, but we will keep an eye on the project as it develops.
