DC Will Make a True Believer Out of You With Return of Dollar Comics

DC Comics is taking a cue from the House of Ideas by offering four classic comic book reprints for one dollar in September, similar to Marvel's True Believers reprints solicited each month. But DC is also using the name Dollar Comics, a line they published back in the late 70s and early 80s, so they're actually stealing two ideas from Marvel by reviving something long dead. (rim shot)

Of course, during the first run of Dollar Comics, a dollar was significantly more than the standard price of a comic and featured all new content, more pages, and no ads, frequently used for milestone issue, annuals, or other special occasions, though there were some regular titles too. The new twist on Dollar Comics is that they're reprints that cost one-fourth of the price of a standard comic today.

In addition to offering readers a chance to experience classic books in the format they were designed for, as opposed to a trade paperback or tablet screen, offering these classic reprints for a low price also gives DC a way to compete with Marvel's market-flooding. And Marvel's own True Believers reprints often outsell some of Marvel's lowest-selling titles, as the House of Ideas has much lower per-capita unit sales despite their high dollar share of the market, so DC will have the added bragging rights of probably having 30-year-old comics outsell several of Marvel's new books as well.

Bottom line is that it's a good move all around for DC, and one that's sure to make many readers say…
