We Almost Got Metroid and Castlevania Cartoon Shows in the '80s

A bit of shocking nostalgia made it's way onto Twitter tonight as we've all learned that we almost got Saturday morning cartoons of Metroid and Castlevania! The Twitter account Tanooki Joe posted some promo art from an eBay listing showing some promo art for the old Super Mario Bros. Super Show that ran from 1989-91, in which they showed off artwork for possible cartoons to run alongside the program for what would have been called the Super Mario Bros. Power Hour. The cartoons that would have followed included animated versions of Metroid, Double Dragon, Castlevania, and California Games! (Yes, THAT California Games.) Check out this concept art for what could have been!

In some respects, it's a good thing these didn't happen, as the Metroid one clearly shows a man in the armor instead of Samus Aran, because of course, someone thought it would be better to replace her with a man in the '80s. Meanwhile, the Castlevania show looks like it would have been a watered-down Scooby-Doo ripoff, as you see two kids frightened of the monsters instead of a Belmont doing battle. The one that looks like it would be on par with what the game was is Double Dragon, and by the looks of things, California Games was probably going to end up being their version of Wacky Races. It's an interesting look at what could have been for Nintendo, but in some respects, probably best it never happened.
