Nintendo just added another weird wrinkle in the canon of Super Mario Bros. lore as it appears goombas now have arms that we’ve just never seen. After decades of assuming the creatures were basically just triangle-shaped heads with a pair of feet, a new photo has appeared online that completely defies everything we’ve known about them until now. The image below appeared on Twitter, showing what appears to be a prototype figure with an official Nintendo license on the back, showing a Goomba with a pair of arms behind his back and interlocking fingers as if he were standing at attention.

People have been freaking out about this revelation on Twitter, saying everything from calling it a fake to a mutation to lore we’ve never known about because it was never necessary. Even showing off screenshots from cartoons like the one below suggesting it’s been that way all along. The big problem we’re having is that no one, not even the person who originated the photo, has an explanation to the figure and where it came from. It’s not like Nintendo made an announcement about it like when they tried to claim Mario was no longer a plumber, and then made him a plumber again. We await a formal statement from Nintendo as to what is going on!
