Robert Purchase over at Eurogamer had the chance to talk with Linsey Murdock, the lead designer for Guild Wars 2, ArenaNet’s long-running MMORPG.
Murdock talked with Eurogamer about the new flying mount for Guild Wars 2, which is called the Skyscale. And it’s a dragon, which gives it some excellent game mechanics.
We talked about the griffon [the game’s existing flying mount] being a jet engine, it goes very fast in a straight line. But the dragon is more like a helicopter so it can take off from the ground and go up. It can gain altitude; the griffon can’t.”
The really cool feature that surprised us all was wall jumping, or climbing, the Skyscale can actually stick to the wall and regain some of his endurance and then jump up and gain some altitude.

Okay, that sounds pretty cool. And it’s a freaking dragon, so does that mean there’s going to be some fire-breathing?
The Skyscale mount will be available as part of the the game’s next Living World story drop, Episode 6: War Eternal. We don’t have a release date for that installment yet, but we’ll keep you updated when we know it!
Guild Wars 2 remains pretty popular, despite its age. The game originally debuted in the summer of 2012 and has had a healthy following ever since, largely due to the game’s engaging world mechanics, which take player’s actions into consideration and have real impact on the overall story-line.
Guild Wars 2 has also managed to keep going nearly 7 years without a mandatory subscription model, and still enjoys robust support from the developers.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to level up a character worthy of a flying dragon mount!
