Runaways Season 2 Set to Release this Winter Plus Adding New Characters

Runaways came to the small screen late last year and was renewed for a second season at Hulu back in January. Since then we haven't heard much of anything about the project but it sounds like that second season isn't that far off. Matt Mitovich of TV Line was on the set today and confirmed that the show would be returning "this winter" but did not give a specific date.

Deadline got a chance to speak to executive producer and co-showrunner Josh Schwartz and how this second season is going to focus on the kids having actually runaway and what that means for their survival.

"It's going to accelerate. We are now running with our kids," said Schwartz. "Our focus shifts to these kids and trying to survive in the streets… there's a greater sense of tension and momentum in keeping with where we are in this part of the story."

Runaways

This isn't something that kids should have to deal with but it's the reality they all accepted when they agreed to all run. They're going to have to grow up fast.

"In the real world, young people are dealing with adult themes. The world the adults are leaving young people, there's a responsibility on young people to fix this world. It feels so broken in so many ways. That is also a theme for our characters and for the show."

One of the things that the show did that no one was really expecting was focus a bit more on the parents than the comics ever did. While the kids will remain the central focus of the show that doesn't mean we won't be watching the parents.

While the series will focus heavily on the young ones, the parents won't be too far off. There is "the ticking clock that requires them to find their kids before something catastrophic potentially could occur," Schwartz hinted.

Runaways

Schwartz went on to tease that they will be adding more characters to the second season of Runaways with his co-showrunner Stephanie Savage teasing that these are well known characters.

"There are some characters who appear in the book who are appearing in Season 2," Schwartz teased without giving too much away. "They are really popular, exciting characters," EP and showrunner Stephanie Savage added.

At the moment we don't know anything about the second season of Runaways but if the winter release date ends up being true it's likely we'll start to learn more in the fall. Perhaps they will host a panel at New York Comic-Con like they did last year where they premiered the pilot for fans.

Summary: After discovering their parents are super-villains in disguise, a group of teenagers band together to run away from their homes in order to atone for their parents' actions and to discover the secrets of their origins.

Marvel's Runaways, created by Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, stars Gregg Sulkin, Ariela Barer, Lyrica Okano, Allegra Acosta, Virginia Gardner, and Rhenzy Feliz. The first season is streaming to Hulu now.
