Nightwing #45 Review: Wyrming Into Your Life

Dick Grayson wakes up to a very surprising face in his bed. Before he can process this, he leaves to meet up with a personal training client. During this session, the two find a body in the Bludhaven bay. Detective Svoboda discerns that the body belonged to a police informant who was doxxed not too long before his death. This coaxes Nightwing into investigating Mirage, a new tech conglomerate muscling into Bludhaven.

Nightwing #45 is a slower installment which pushes Dick Grayson slowly into the direction of the mystery of Mirage before kicking things into high gear in the final handful of pages.

The content is largely good. We get to see more of Dick Grayson's personal life and how he spends his time outside of the tights. His superhero life and personal life meet a little in this issue, though I won't spoil the specifics.

The opening does easily lead to some touchy questions, though there is still space for the upcoming issues to resolve said questions.

The "threat of technology" angle is handled decently. There are some moments where the comic can sound a little like a Luddite, but it raises some genuine points about the internet age, the doxxing plot point being among them.

Chris Mooneyham brings a more classic look to Nightwing than previous artists. The detailing is more angular, with Dick having a strong chin. Some characters can look odd at times, but the book looks good on the whole. Nick Filardi brings some solid color art in the form of a more centered but balanced palette than most comics. It fits the somewhat gritty plot and line work, so it is a welcome aspect of the book.

Nightwing #45 is another solid entry for the series, with Benjamin Percy slipping into the book naturally and keeping the Dick Grayson we know and love. The art team does some solid work too, and the comic earns another recommendation. Check it out.
