The Final Fantasy VII remake was announced way back at E3 2015, and since then we’ve gotten updates on the game every few months or so thanks to new screenshot drops or social media commentary. However, based on the latest information we have, the game is still under heavy development. Even with its episodic format, at this point the likelihood that the game will release any time in calendar year 2018 is so slim we’re calling it an impossibility.
Earlier this month it was revealed that Square Enix was hiring “core members” for the development team, which is never a good sign. And just the other day we learned that Mobius Final Fantasy‘s projectleader Naoki Hamaguchi has moved onto the FFVII remake team. Hamaguchi has been serving as the development leader for the FFVII remake for some time now, but has fully left his duties at Mobius to focus on the highly anticipated remake.
Now, you might recall that the job listing for core members indicated that the base game might already. However, given SE’s relative silence on the project, the actual text of the job listing, and Hamaguchi’s move, it seems like there is still quite a bit to be done before the remake will ever see the light of day. A key portion of the job listing read:
“We are examining programs that implement general functions and contents for Final Fantasy VII Remake as necessary on the development team, and while we are reaching a satisfactory level in terms of reproducing the original title in high-quality graphics, we have come to the conclusion that we should aim for even higher quality in order to meet the expectations of fans.”
That does not bode well.
And fans would do well to recall that Square Enix’s development window for the game, despite promises of a 2018 release, have been pretty conservative. The last official word was “before 2020,” and the official press info site for the game lists the release as “TBA.”
