One of the major themes of Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 was the relationship between sons and fathers, but in what may be the most mind-blowing Easter eggs ever, director James Gunn has revealed who Baby Groot’s father is: Groot!
When Groot died to save his teammates at the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy, and then Baby Groot appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the assumption was that this was the same Groot grown from a small cutting of the original Groot, even though it’s not the first time Gunn has said the characters are not the same. However, Gunn’s latest tweet takes things a step further, revealing that Baby Groot is actually the son of the original Groot, and that the original Groot is truly dead!
This shocking revelation came to be when Gunn chimed in on a thread discussing the hypothetical dilemma of who one would save if given the choice between Groot Jr. and a Porg. Things quickly devolved from there into the incredibly clickworthy exchange that spawned this and dozens of other clickbait articles!

Groot is not an animal! He's an advanced lifeform! It's easy!!
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) February 27, 2018
But Gunn’s callous acceptance of porg slaughter wasn’t the end of it. The discussion continued:
That answer is a cheat, as the question makes it clear whoever isn't saved dies. You just sacrificed the life of a thinking being who saved all life in the universe for a single bird.

It's guaranteed! You can save one means the other one is NOT SAVED. You murdered Groot for a big-eyed pigeon.

First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son.

It’s canon AF (and it’s in the movies).

He doesn’t have adult Groot’s memories for one. Adult Groot would know what button to push!

It all checks out. Gunn is telling the truth, though it may be a hard truth for some of us to accept, though sharing this shameful clickbait article on social media would probably help with the grief. And if nothing else, we’ve now learned intimate details about how Groot procreates: vegetatively (hawt!). That’s gotta count for something, right?
