Conservative moral pressure group One Million Moms usually restrict themselves to campaigns to get broadcasters or advertisers to cancel or boycott television programmes like Teachers or Lucifer. They first came to Bleeding Cool’s attention however when they targeted the appearance of Archie Comics in Toys ‘R’ Us, with a gay interracial marriage on the cover.
Well, it seems that despite their best efforts, people are still reading. And so now they are targeting Scholastic Book Fairs.
Scholastic Book Fair is a fun, pop-up events that mostly take place in schools. Scholastic supplies a school with mobile bookcases packed with over 200 of the newest and best books from over sixty publishers to sell to their pupils with the aim of helping develop a life-long love of reading, while also letting the school qualify for free books. Many publishers have found them a way to get a lot of sales, very quickly. Marvel Comics has found it a great source of interest for the likes of Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Bone is a massive seller, and Raina Telgemeier has weaponised sales of her graphic novels to become the best selling comic book creator in America today.
But One Million Moms have their eyes on another target: books that dare to mention that transgender people exist. They write:
Everyone is familiar with Scholastic Inc. Their book fairs are popular fundraisers at your child’s school. However, Scholastic is not safe for your child and parents should be warned.
Scholastic Inc., the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books, is using its platform to promote pro-homosexual and pro-transgender books for children.
The corporation, for example, published a pro-transgender book called George for 3rd graders. “When people look at George, they think they see a boy,” the book reads. “But she [George] knows she’s not a boy. She knows she’s a girl.”
According to its website, Scholastic Inc. reaches 6 million children per week with its publications. It features morally toxic reading lists for children, such as:
“Books for Two-Mommy Families”
“Great books for Two-Dad Families”
“6 Picture Books About Transgender Children”
The American College of Pediatricians warns: “Conditioning children into believing that a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful is child abuse.”
Scholastic does not have our children’s best interests at heart. Tell Scholastic to stop harming children.
Please use the information we have provided on our website to contact Scholastic, Inc. and ask that they discontinue publishing and promoting pro-homosexual and pro-transgender books for children.
How very dare they. The group encourages people to phone Scholastic, engage with them on social media, or email them with the following message:
Attn: President and CEO Dick Robinson,
As a parent and member of OneMillionMoms.com, I am urging you to please discontinue publishing and promoting pro-homosexual and pro-transgender books for children, such as George by Alex Gino. Picture books that deliberately target young children with the idea that a biological boy can become a girl are false, harmful, and confusing. I will not support a company that purposefully confuses children.
Scholastic is attempting to normalize gender dysphoria, which is a mental disorder that requires psychological help and not praise. The American College of Pediatricians warns: “Conditioning children into believing that a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful is child abuse.”
You will not have my financial support as a consumer as long as you veer away from family-friendly material.
I look forward to hearing from you regarding my concern.
Just in case you aren’t aware, the American College of Pediatricians isn’t exactly an independent organisation. It is, itself, a socially conservative advocacy group of paediatricians and other healthcare professionals founded by the likes of Joseph Zanga, as a protest against the American Academy of Pediatrics’ support for adoption by gay couples. They have been listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for “propagating damaging falsehoods about LGBT people” and the director of the US National Institutes of Health has accused them of misusing or mischaracterizing their work to advance their political agenda.
If you are interested, George by Alex Gino can be ordered here.
When people look at George, they think they see a boy. But she knows she’s not a boy. She knows she’s a girl.
George thinks she’ll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte’s Web. George really, really, REALLY wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can’t even try out for the part . . . because she’s a boy.
With the help of her best friend, Kelly, George comes up with a plan. Not just so she can be Charlotte — but so everyone can know who she is, once and for all.
