Ryan Coogler Says Shooting Black Panther Was "Emotionally Moving"

Ryan Coogler is about to have one hell of a 2018. The director is bringing Black Panther to the big screen this Feburary, which is a milestone for black superheroes and has a predominately black cast. Coogler recently spoke at Vulture Fest LA (via Deadline) about bringing this character to life. While adapting something like a novel involves one consistent creator and tone, comics change radically depending on who is writing the character.

"Stan Lee and Jack Kirby invented this character in the '60s," said Coogler. "Christopher Priest, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Reginald Hudlin have added on and updated the pages as time goes on."

Coogler thought that filming Black Panther was going to be a challenge because the character has everything going for him in the beginning.

"In a way, I thought it was going to be tough, because I'm not sure I like this dude," said the Creed director. "He's so different from what I am used to. But through the process of making the film and working with Chad and trying to explore and find ownership in it, I'm incredibly attached to this character now. In our film, you find him at a time where he lost his father, the most important person in his life. He's inheriting this incredible responsibility. He's inheriting it at a time when Wakanda is struggling what its identity might be and the people have different ideas of what they should do. He's incredibly conflicted but is aware of his responsibility of what to do."

Coogler talked about rehearsing a specific scene with John Kani as T'Chaka (either a flashback, or maybe they meet on a spiritual level — so not really a spoiler, since he's dead in Captain America: Civil War), and they were speaking in the South African language Xhosa.

"Realizing that we were going to have this film where a father and son talk to each other in this native African language in a superhero movie — it hit me for a moment," he said. "It was emotionally moving. That was big one."

Coogler talked about about how he's making the movie he would have wanted to see as a kid. He also shared the story of how the Coogler met the two young kids of producer Charles King. They were at the panel in Hall H during Comic-Con International where Coogler screened footage. They gave him a hug and expressed how much they loved it.

"Their world is different from our world. These kids they are gonna save all of us," said Coogler. "We got to do our part to keep pushing things forward. To see a movie where somebody looks like me that is a king and knows their ancestry and has an army of incredible folks around them and who believe in them? I don't know what that would have done for me when I was 10 years old."

Representation matters for those kids that are going to save us all. This next generation is going to be fired up after seeing themselves on screen in a very potent and real way. They're going to bring that love and passion to all aspects of society. We'll be better for it.

Summary: T'Challa, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king.

Black Panther, directed Ryan Coogler, stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, and Martin Freeman. It will be released on February 16th, 2018.
