48 Hours To Fund Shawn McManus's Zombie Baseball Players

Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, Shawn McManus entered the comics field in the early 1980s with work for Heavy Metal and DC Comics.

For the June 1983 issue of Heavy Metal he collaborated with Bhob Stewart and John Coffey on "Zenobia". Six months later, McManus and Stewart teamed with Jim McDermott on "Symbiosis", also in Heavy Metal before working for DC on the Green Arrow backup feature in Detective Comics in 1983-1984. McManus gained wider attention when he illustrated two issues of The Saga of the Swamp Thing written by Alan Moore, which became some of the most loved in that series' run.

He would later work extensively on Fables, Doctor Fate, and Omega Men for DC Comics, as well as Sandman.

But now he has decided what the world really need is a set of themed zombie baseball cards, all written and drawn by him. How did such a state of affairs come about?

In 1931 the owners of the Gray Sox built their new stadium on land owned by the Pondasoit Indian Tribe which was seized a year earlier by eminent domain under the pretense of a public improvement project. Incensed, the Chief of the Tribe put a curse on anyone who set foot on the field of the new ballpark. The rotting flesh disease started with the Gray Sox and quickly spread to infect the entire league. For six years the teams played to sellout crowds, more for the spectacle than the contest itself. The curse was broken when an earthquake destroyed the stadium in 1936.

This is the full 24-card set, in non-stealable low resolution.

Shawn tells us:

"All the actual card art is done for this set. I've got a printing company ready to start shortly after this project gets funded. The only piece to this puzzle that is not completed yet is that all 10 hand drawn zombie cards are not completed yet, which I'll finish after this campaign ends. Backers should receive their rewards no later than mid January, most likely earlier."

Fancy a punt? No, wait, wrong sport…
