Gotham Season 4: What Are The Signals For The Season?

This this has become Speculation Sunday as I broke down where I though the Arrowverse series are going, I figure it's as good a day as any to talk about where we're going in the other series I cover. Let's talk about another DCTV series, Gotham.

Gotham

This fourth season seems to be moving at warp speed. Bruce went from crying kid in the alley to street vigilante in the same amount of time it took me to from nerdy freshman to nerdy senior in high school. The actor, David Mazouz, still looks young so it's a big shocking to me when he stands next to someone like Jim Gordon and he's taller. As much as I thought the black outfit he got from Lucius Fox looked like it was stolen from the set of Kick-Ass, he is much more imposing looking in it than out. It's know Batman suit, but it works for what they're trying to do.

I am a little surprised that we are only five episodes into the new season and we've already done the Scarecrow arc and seem to be moving on from Ra's al Ghul. The introduction of Solomon Grundy has now created an Of Mice and Men dynamic between him and Ed Nygma. I would be surprised if we don't get a moment with Grundy petting a live rabbit somehow. This could be my new favorite subplot going on. Much more so than whatever is going on between Sofia Falcone and Oswald Cobblepot. One of the things I liked the most about the series was Robin Lord Taylor's performance as the manipulative and conniving Penguin. He hasn't been that in a while.

With Ra's gone, I was more than a little surprised to see Alfred trying to steer Bruce towards continuing as a vigilante. That seems out of character for Alfred in both the series and the characters history. Alfred doesn't want Bruce hurt and would prefer he stay home and date supermodels. He aids Bruce as Batman because he wants to make sure that Bruce comes home safely and knows he can't stop Bruce from suiting up. But here Bruce was giving up the suit and Alfred stops him, encourages him to keep at it and saves the suit for when Bruce is ready.

The most interesting thing here to me is the introduction of Professor Pyg. Unlike the majority of Batman villains who have read in story after story, seen on animated series and live-action movies… Professor Pyg is a character I know very little about. I know he turns people into porcelain dolls and is more than a little screwed up, but otherwise it's new territory for me and that is rare on television. But at the rate their going through stories, I expect the Professor to be around for like two episodes and we'll be moving on to the next big villain/storyarc.
