Gotta Fight 'Em All: A Quick Review Of 'Pokkén Tournament DX'

Pokkén Tournament DX is, at its core, a refined version of the original 2016 game we saw on Wii U. The original game was what would happen if you actually had control of your Pokémon during a trainer battle in a fighting game. You use the abilities of each creature to the best of your ability to overtake the other and win. This version of the game comes with all the original stuff unlocked right at the beginning, along with new features added to give familiar players something new to do, while giving a bigger experience to new players.

So what does Pokkén Tournament DX offer beyond being available on Nintendo's latest console? The game throws in five extra Pokémon to change up the order just a bit and play to fan favorites like Darkrai and Scizor, a tradition 3-vs-3 mode as if you were playing like a real trainer vs. trainer battle, and a daily online challenge mode where accomplishing such acts will get you skill points in the game. There are ranked online battles the same as Arms and Splatoon 2, if you're into that sort of thing with Pokémon. A split screen version which makes little sense as it kills the graphics. And finally, a cleaned up look.

I enjoyed Pokkén Tournament DX to an extent, but it feels like this is the version we should have gotten before. Adding a bunch of bells and whistles to it didn't really improve the experience and basically felt like my time was being occupied with needless busywork. Especially the daily challenges which felt more like chores than game modes. The 3-v-3 mode is probably the best addition, but again, seems pretty elementary that we should have had it from the start.
