We have a new rumor surrounding that Joker movie that The Hangover director Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese. The movie was just announced to a less than favorable reception from the internet. It seems as if a good portion of people don’t want to know or don’t care to know the origin of the Clown Prince of Gotham.
Regardless, the movie has been green lit and we might have some new information about it. Brendan Schaub is a former MMA fighter who has transitioned into Hollywood. He’s a regular on the Joe Rogan Experience @1:03:32 (via Batman-News) and they started talking about Batman. That lead to Schaub saying he was friends with Todd Feldman, who is Todd Phillips’ agent, and revealed what could be the basic plot of the movie.
“My boy Todd Feldman put this together with Todd Phillips,” Schaub said. “It’s dark. It’s like a dark Joker. As a kid, he had a permanent smile and everyone made fun of him. It’s like on the streets of Brooklyn. It’s super dark and real.”
There are a couple of red flags right there that could point to something very bad about this already terrible idea; is this movie going to try and make us empathize with the Joker? The Joker is a murderer who has killed and tortured people and if they try to explain all of that by playing the “he was bullied” card then that’s just gross. It’s like saying anyone with mental illness is going to turn into a serial killer or a veteran with PTSD is one firework away from a shooting spree. You don’t get to hand wave all of those terrible things away by saying that he had a tough childhood. Plenty of people have tough childhoods and turn out just fine.
There is only one way to approach a Joker movie and that is basically telling it like you’re telling the origin of a serial killer. Don’t paint him as the good guy because he isn’t and the minute you do it negates using the character in the first place.
