Spider-Man: Homecoming Passes Iron Man At The Domestic Box Office

Spider-Man: Homecoming passed another milestone this weekend. Despite the fact that some outlets are saying the movie hasn't been a success, it's slowly making its way up the domestic charts but it did pass another movie this weekend. With a domestic gross of $318,843,082 Spider-Man has inched past the first Iron Man movie putting at #16 on the over all chart according to Box Office Mojo.

While that does put it considerably behind behind some of the other comic book movies this summer it is still doing very well. It's currently sitting at $737,043,082 for its worldwide box office and it hasn't opened in China yet. They are expecting it do well there, and that should push the movie into the $900 worldwide range by the end of its run.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

The question does become why didn't Spider-Man: Homecoming fair better in its domestic run? There are a couple of reasons for this, with the main one being people are kind of over Spider-Man. There have been five movies and this is the third reboot since 2002.

There's also the problem of July being packed with a ton of good movies. In three weeks we got Spider-Man, War for the Planet of the Apes, and Dunkirk the latter two were very well reviewed. There wasn't any time for Spider-Man to flourish in a July so packed with good movies. While opening weekends are important the second, third, and so on are just as important. Otherwise you might get buried under a bunch of other releases. This is the fundamental problem with the summer blockbuster season and why it could all come crashing down.
