In Which Order Do People Watch The Marvel Netflix Shows?

The concept of streaming and binge-watching television shows is something that the entertainment industry is still very much getting used to. There are numbers and ideas that everyone is studying so they can understand the mind of the average Netflix watcher. When it comes to bringing in comic fans, nothing has worked better than the various Marvel Netflix shows, which finally releases their big team-up on August 18th. Some interesting data is coming out about those shows, and USA Today has broken it down.

The first thing Netflix realized was that, instead of going chronologically, most people started out with Jessica Jones. The order then goes Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, with one in eight viewers being new to comic-based content. Todd Yellin, Netflix's vice president of product innovation, said:

"When it comes to an individual story, they'll watch it in order. But when it comes to these related kind of series, they're very different kinds of stories. They watch them in order of how they're interested in them and how they learn about them."

In terms of progression, it is reported that Jessica Jones leads into Daredevil and vice versa, while Luke Cage leads into Iron Fist and vice versa. Iron Fist and Luke Cage have a long comic history of being one of the great bromances of the genre but, weirdly, Jessica Jones didn't lead into Luke Cage as much, despite Cage making an appearance in the show.

The data didn't say where Daredevil Season 2 seemed to fit into this, but people are likely watching those two seasons back to back. The data seems to indicate, at least for now, that the one that has hit the hardest with audiences is Jessica Jones. It's a show that people who don't like superheroes loved, and one that helped a lot of victims of sexual assault come forward to tell their stories. In The Defenders, most reviewers agreed that Jessica was one of the best elements of the show. So it looks like the Marvel Netflix shows are dominated by women, with Jessica serving as the most popular character and Rosario Dawson's series-jumping nurse Claire Temple serving as the glue.
