At The Defenders panel at San Diego Comicon, they revealed that Iron Fist was renewed for a second season. The first season wasn’t well received but there seems to be a warmer reception to his character in The Defenders. One of the reasons for that warmer reception is that Danny looks like he can actually fight in this show. Star Finn Jones spoke to Inverse about why those fights look better.
None. I went from Iron Fist straight into Defenders. I had a week to turn around and that was all pretty much costume fittings, script read-throughs, and sleeping. In terms of training, really, it has been in the first season and in both of the shows. It’s been on the job. I’ve seen Iron Fist and Defenders as the first phase of Danny’s journey. I don’t really differentiate between the two, which has been a great thing for me because I’ve been able to play this arc of a character over a long period of time and it’s allowed me to be very nuanced and slow-burning, which I’ve really enjoyed. We’ve been taking our time getting Danny into top form.
That lack of time meant that Jones went straight from Iron Fist to Defenders but he was feeling more comfortable by the time Defenders rolled around.
Obviously, by the time Defenders came, I’d been working on [*Iron Fist*] and performing the choreography for nearly six or seven months, so I’d gotten a lot more used to it. Also, we had a new choreography team [for *Defenders*] and we had a different cameraman. So, the way it was constructed and the way that it was directed and put together was very different, which I think also helped the show’s choreography.
We don’t have a start date on Iron Fist season 2 yet but Jones has revealed that they are putting in the time this time as far as training goes.
Now, just gonna let you know, moving into Season 2 of Iron Fist, I’m actually starting my training next week. We’re at least four or five months away from shooting, so this time around, I’m being given a lot more preparation leading up to Season 2, which I think is really gonna have a huge improvement on the quality of the fight scenes in Season 2 of Iron Fist.
That means we should expect Iron Fist to start shooting in early 2018 and, if Marvel remains on a three show track, it’ll be the early 2019 show. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage season 2 are both filming currently though Jessica Jones started first so that show will likely come out first. Daredevil season 3 is rumored to start shooting in October of this year so that will be next. The Punisher will be coming out sometime late this year.
