The Hulk is a great character that I admittedly don’t follow. I know the basics about him, and I know he can kick major butt. I know there’s a Red Hulk, a Planet Hulk, and a She-Hulk. But I figured I’d give Generations: Banner Hulk & The Totally Awesome Hulk #1 a shot.
In this book, we even have two Hulks, one being Bruce Banner, the other being Amadeus Cho. Cho wakes up to see the original Hulk doing what he does best (smashing things), and tries valiantly to calm the big green guy down. Do they become friends? Or do they fight it out like Hulks?
Personally, I have no idea who Cho is. I’ve never read anything with him in it. As a standalone story, to someone who is a newbie, I was confused. How did Cho get to where Banner was? There’s actually a lot of questions I had, but I have a feeling writer Greg Pak will most likely explain everything later on in the series.
The writing is exceptional in this story. Cho has a clear, defined voice that exudes strength and understanding, while Banner is paranoid and gruff. The two work well together, and it makes for an excellent character-driven plot. Despite my lack of knowledge with Hulk, Pak has made me like them just a little more — enough to want to follow this series.
Matteo Buffagni is currently a hot artist, and for good reason. The Hulks look physically different. While Banner’s has a constantly angry face with furrowed brows, Cho’s Hulk has a more open and inviting face — one that doesn’t look like he’s going to smash you into bits.
Pak and Buffagni are an excellent team, and really make this book worthwhile. If you’re looking to start in a Marvel series, I don’t know if Generations: Banner Hulk & The Totally Awesome Hulk is the right choice (as you may be lost like me), but I still enjoyed it, and you may as well.
