SDCC Marvel Cup O' Joe Panel Report: Lackluster And Boring

SDCC Marvel Cup O' Joe Panel Report: Lackluster And Boring

The big Marvel news panel of SDCC rolls around again, so we will see what kind of announcements and news chief creative officer Joe Quesada has in store for us this time. Bringing editors Nick Lowe, CB Cebulski, Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker the VP of Development of Marvel TV and New Media, and creators Kris Anka, Rainbow Rowell, Sean Ryan and fresh off his Eisner win, Ryan North, the room slowly filled with fans eager to hear what next big thing will be shared with us now.

First up is Runaways, Lowe discusses waiting for the perfect creative team, and when he read Eleanor and Park and knew he'd found the right writer, and described Anka as the perfect artist. Rowell always felt like they were perfect Marvel characters, so it felt wrong that they were not currently in a book and had slipped into obscurity. Rowell says it's been like unearthing something beautiful.

Anka says he's from LA, he grew up with people like this, so it felt like working with kids he knows. Like kids he knows. Art is shown, even more than the initial four pages released in Previews, and it appears to show a lot more of the potential plot.

Next is the Inhumans TV show trailer. Which I had not seen yet. It certainly looks a lot better than the first trailer, but still, that Medusa hair….

Axel Alonso joined the panel. And Lowe discusses Inhumans: Once & Future Kings, which takes place before Black Bolt was king. They run away from Attilan and are pursued by an incredible force.

Amanat then comes on to discuss new initiatives, starting with the Miles Morales: Spider-Man novel by Jason Reynolds. Then Squirrel Girl novel and Super Hero Adventures series of books for young readers, all featuring Spider-Man and another hero or villain, and he learns things from them, by Mackenzie Cadenhead & Sean Ryan.

Cebulski then tells us about something called Sword Master, by talking about how the original intention of Marvel was to show the world outside your window. As such, they are now looking to expand to include different cultures, will be creating a couple new series created 100% by Chinese creators. Sword Master and Aero will be two new books, and heroes. Sword Master has ties to the Ancient One and Captain America and Aero has connections to Tony Stark. They will launch in Mandarin first, and then launch in the States next year. They will be edited by Mark Paniccia.

Cebulski added here that he thinks all of Marvel's Asian characters are always stereotypical. If they are Japanese, then they must be a ninja and situations like that.

Next up Quesada talks about the Animations teams Emmy nomination, and then queues up the Rocket & Groot short (which I have really wanted to see), involving the designs of Skottie Young.

Marvel: Legacy up next. Not a crossover, the one shot will be full of easter eggs and reveals and the closing moments Alonso promises will get people talking. North is then invited to discuss Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, and how it will be a big cosmic story, which they had not yet had the chance to do. Lowe reveals that in Spider-Man, Miles will have his first encounter with a new Sinister Six, led by a new Iron Spider. Who is under the mask will be a mystery, and will put all of Miles' family and friends through their paces. Sinister Six also includes Bombshells mom, Spot, Sandman, Electro and Hobgoblin.

Lowe then discusses the Marvel Insider incentive and how it can bring prizes and swag and experiences to fans.

Moving onto audience questions: Mark Buckingham and D'Israeli is redrawing and coloring all of the Silver Age of Miracleman, so they are not quite ready to start releasing it yet, but they will return to it when they can release the comic on a good schedule.

Favorite part of your job? Alonso says 'being mean to Nick Lowe'. Cebulski says Spider-Man, Fantastic Four. North says coming up with new ideas. Lowe reiterates from an earlier panel when you see new art come in. Anka says also being mean to Nick Lowe. Rowell says collaboration, as being a writer can be a very lonely experience. Amanat says fans cosplaying. Wacker says telling stories so the audience feels inspired to do the same. Quesada told a story about a fan online who thanked him about a time he got in trouble in school because of a comic he made, but also getting to work with the people at Marvel.

Where are they C.B?

Fan thanks Amanat for Ms Marvel and says he thinks Amanat is one of the most important people in comics today, but then asks Rowell about what's she likes about Runaways, Rowell says it's because they're a series of screw ups but they try real hard, and they talk a lot. She feels at home with them. What's interesting with working with a collaborator? She says she'd written the first six issues before Anka signed on, but even then everything shifted into place when Anka came onboard – basically people take their shirts off a lot.

Wacker says the Runaways pilot is amazing.

Frank Castle definitely is putting on the War Machine armour, and is not a joke. Says the idea came from someone in their creative services team, who makes t-shirts.

Will we see more X-Men merchandise? Quesada says none of them can answer as they don't work in that department. Cebulski does say a lot of X-Men characters are making it into their games. Alonso then teases of Astonishing X-Men it's an hours d'oeuvre for the feast to come.

One thing you wish you'd done differently? Asked by Zack Wacker, Stephen Wacker's son, Lowe wished he spelled Isaac Newton correctly that one time he misspelled it on a cover. Quesada says not a thing, because then he wouldn't be where he is now. One life lesson was his bad falling out at Valiant, and how he went public with it. In retrospect he shouldn't have.

How will Inhumans show mix with Agents of SHIELD? Quesada said they are in the same universe, that's all he'll say. Ta Nehisi Coates (the questioner thanked them for Black Panther) is with Marvel for the long haul.

What character would you reinvent? Wacker thinks there's a great Jack of Hearts story out there. Rowell says Elektra. Anka says Adam X the Extreme. North feels he does that already with Squirrel Girl. Lowe wants to bring back Nextwave. Cebulski says Dani Moonstar and Alonso says Shang-Chi.

What did they learn from the controversy over Captain America? Quesada says wouldn't do anything differently, and it's a lesson they learned a while ago, they will not be dictated or create with fear. He advises creators to not worry what people are gonna say.
