Chadwick Boseman Talks Isolationism In 'Black Panther'

It's looking like Black Panther is going to be the star of Comic-Con International, if the coverage from Entertainment Weekly is anything to go by. While visiting the set of the highly anticipated Marvel movie, EW talked to star Chadwick Boseman and Marvel megaboss Kevin Feige about Wakanda and the political world that T'Challa is walking into. He's conflicted because he saw his father die while reaching out to the rest of the world, so he has an impulse to pull back. Boseman said:

"That hasn't traditionally been their attitude towards the rest of the world. [T'Chaka] wanted to step out of those boundaries. … It's a like a new leader taking power and trying to figure out if he should do it the older traditional way. You would think the younger man would want to do something different than the father, but the father – for a reason that I don't want to say – was thinking ahead and beyond those boundaries."

Black PantherFeige went on to talk about the climate of Wakanda and how they have been isolated so long that it puts them in an odd position:

"Part of the story is about the isolationist state of Wakanda coming to terms with the modern day. … There are other people [in the story] who say, 'No, we shouldn't do that.' You get into conversations about refugees. You get into conversations about, 'Should we help the people on the other side of that border, because they need help and we could help them …. but it would potentially endanger us.'"

It's a question people are asking themselves a lot these days. People are seeing the opportunities to to help other at a great personal risk, and it's a conversation a lot of countries have had. Feige continued:

"It is so rich in culturally relevant ideas. … These are conversations we were having two years ago because that is inherently the story within the comics. Now it's going to seem like the most highly fluid thing we could have done."

Chadwick Boseman Talks Isolationism In 'Black Panther'The best movies are ones we can relate to on more than one level, and everything we are hearing about Black Panther makes it sound like a movie that will hit on more levels than we can count.
