Spider-Man Homecoming's $117 Million Opening Is Franchise's Second Best, Plus Wonder Woman Update

The estimate tallies are in, and Spider-Man: Homecoming fended off all challengers and exceeded early estimates by bringing in $117 million for its opening weekend domestically. Originally expected to make around $95 million, the wall-crawler's appeal was the second-greatest in franchise history, with only Spider-Man 3 bringing in more cash on its opening weekend, and that had a fantastic musical number that really gave it an unfair advantage. Internationally, the movie brought in an estimated additional $140 million.

Positive reviews, a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score, and good word of mouth helped Spider-Man: Homecoming web up the massive take, though a little help from friends with star power like Tony Stark probably helped as well. Spider-Man: Homecoming's opening ranks it third for the entire year, behind Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Plus we know at least one guy who watched it over and over, and forced his employees to do so as well, all weekend long, demanding somebody "bring him pictures of Spider-Man."

Meanwhile, Wonder Woman has continued to increase her global tally, now at $745 million, tied with Suicide Squad for second place in the DCEU, and less than $100 million away from Batman v. Superman's final global tally. Can Warner Bros keep things going long enough for Wonder Woman to take the top spot? Perhaps a late Summer limited edition director's cut release could help with that. In North America, Wonder Woman is now the 34th highest grossing film of all time, beating Deadpool, $368 million to $363 million.
