The Most Unlikely Success Story – The Sunstone Hardcover

There is a certain way you do comics that has been working (and not working) for decades. And then there is Sunstone from Stjepan Sejic. Sunstone is part of a huge personal project for Sejic, the new artist for Aquaman. He's been working on it for years while doing a lot of work for Top Cow and some side work for Zenescope, Dynamite and more. But he didn't put the book out as individual issues. Instead he posted it for free on his DeviantArt page. That move built up a huge following so when Top Cow collected the story into multiple trades, they did extremely well. One of the best selling trades for the company. And now it's getting a hardcover collecting the first three trades.

Sunstone is not a superhero book, a horror series or any of the other types of comics that are doing well right now. It's a story about a relationship between two women and their circle of friends. It contains nudity and sexual situations… but the bottom line is it's a modern day romance series and it's doing well. And according to Sejic, there is a lot more to come. Sunstone is wrapping up, but it's just the first of a multi-part story with the next series moving on to a different group of people that are still tangentially connect to Lisa and Ally.

The hardcover hits stores on Wednesday, though it might be hard to find as many comic shops don't carry the series. So check with your retailer to see if they have it or can order it, either wise you can find it on Amazon.
