Curse Words Has Magic Start
The brand new Image series from Charles Soule and Ryan Browne, Curse Words presents us with Wizord the Wizard and his talking koala bear sidekick Margaret in modern New York.
This first issue hits the ground running, and running fast without stumbling once. The humour is fun, the action is enjoyable, the dialogue witty and all in all it makes you feel like this could easily be the next comic picked up for a TV show or movie.
It's kind of like Doctor Strange if he was still an asshole after becoming a hero.
Soule and Browne actually work really well together, and Browne's art is, as ever, incredibly detailed and filled with a kind of wry humour that fits the series as a whole very well.
Colours by Browne, Jordan Boyd and Michael Parkinson play with hots and colds, creating an almost neon vividness that makes the magic seem wild and white hot, and the characters and action stand out.
The comic is fun, has an element of mystery, and an anti-hero pretending at being a straight hero, giving us the pleasure of seeing if he can truly change his nature.
As first issues go, it's a really great start. It will be fun to see where the series goes in the future.
