Wrestler In Process Of Leaving WWE For Hollywood Walks Back Criticism Of Wrestler Who Left WWE For Hollywood

Dwayne, I want you to listen," John Cena told Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in a promo leading up to their Wrestlemania 28 match in 2012. "This is not a movie promotion for me. Dwayne is no longer the people's champion. The first time he got a taste of the bright lights, he was out of here faster than I could say 'Rocky, don't go.' And then a year ago he came back. 'Finally, The Rock has come home.' And then he left again. April 1st means everything for me, because I'm not just fighting for me. I'm fighting for every person behind that curtain whose dream was to be a WWE superstar."

This was one of many comments Cena made about The Rock leading up to their 2012 match, both in the ring and on Twitter. However, John Cena himself has been dipping a toe, perhaps an entire foot, into the Hollywood waters lately, with well-received roles in Trainwreck and Sisters, a role in the upcoming comedy The Pact, and a stint hosting Saturday Night Live. So when Cena made his long-awaited return to WWE Smackdown Live last night, after a several-month absence to focus on his Hollywood career, it turns out he'd had a surprising change of heart on his views about The Rock.

"I consider what I said back then the stupidest stuff ever," Cena said on the program's after-show, Talking Smack. "I was looking at it through very blinded eyes. I really wanted the Rock to come back to the WWE and I figured that hitting him where it hurts would get him back to the WWE, and it worked. But I've apologized to him in person. I'm on the web for the world to see. I was wrong. He was right. He's now the highest paid actor in Hollywood. He has transcended this business. I think any time a superstar can give what he's given to the WWE and then transcend the WWE, that's good for all of us."

Cena will face AJ Styles for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble on January 24.
