Get Your Cape On For The first Full Length Animated DC Super Hero Girls Movie

DC-Superhero-Girls

Marilyn Weiss writes,

Early Sunday morning a crowd gathered to see the premiere of the first full-length DC Super Hero Girls movie, DC Superhero Girls: Hero of the Year. Prior to the movie's release eager viewers had only been able to watch the new adaptation in shots found online. I'm happy to say that the first movie did not disappoint.

[SPOILERS FOR DC SUPERHERO GIRLS: HERO OF THE YEAR!]

The movie begins with Big Barta starting her first day at Super Hero High, a school where heros and (not yet) villains can train and hone their abilities. Initially, super best friends forever, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Bumblebee and Supergirl are wary of her arrival given her villainous past, but they soon move past it and welcome her into their clique.

The entire school is getting ready for the prestigious Hero of the Year competition, where the school names one student as the best hero. Many of our favorite heroes are in the running, including Cyborg, Hawkgirl, Miss Martian, Bumblebee and of course Wonder Woman. But the ceremony cannot run as planned, because a mysterious shadow has taken over the school's statue.

Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl and Bumblebee go on a little field trip to Themyscira to so that the Amazon's alchemist can repair Wonder Woman's broken shield. But it turns out that the mysterious shadow has followed them to the island, and it has stolen the ruby from the Tiara of Triumph. The girls chase after the shadow, and in the chase Bumblebee's suit is damaged.

The shadow takes the ruby to his masters, the evil sorcerer Dark Opal and his queen, Eclipso. It turns out that Eclipso has been stealing the hero's precious metals and jewels so that she can create a device that will allow her to control the universe. It is up to the Super Hero Girls to stop her before it's too late and save the world.

The movie a great addition to the DC Superhero Girls line. It moved well beyond the get to know the character shorts, which was the most we had seen up until now. The movie allowed the characters to grow. There was a great Supergirl flashback with Comet, Krypto her mother on Krypton, which felt like an aged down verison of the Kara we see on the CW Supergirl show. It's a great way to introduce younger viewers to these iconic characters, while still touching on stories that are important to them.

The voice cast absolutely made the movie. Grey Griffin returns for her role as Wonder Woman, playing her slightly younger and lighter than she usually does. The movie also boasts such talents as Tara Strong as Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy, Mae Whitman as Batgirl, Teala Dunn as Bumblebee and for all of you Teen Titans fans out there, there are quick scenes with Khary Payton as Cyborg, Hynden Walch as Starfire and Greg Cipes as Beast Boy.

After the screening there was a quick panel with featuring producer Jennifer Coyle, screenwriter Shea Fontana and author Lisa Yee, along with several members of the voice cast. They talked about what we can expect in the next movie, and I'll give you a hint, the girls are getting close to driving age. We already saw the Batplane in this movie, maybe that means the invisible jet could show up (or rather not show up) in the next movie. Yee also said that she is currently working on her third novel in the DC Super Hero Girls series, which will focus on Batgirl. She is also working on the fourth novel, but couldn't reveal who the focus of that book would be.

DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year will be available for digital download on August 9, and available on DVD on August 23. The second graphic novel, DC Super Hero Girls: Hits and Myths will be coming out later this fall. Watch for it at your local comic store.
