That Walking Dead Spoiler That Will Twist The Book Yet Again….

The Walking Dead 156-000
The Walking Dead, as a long-running soap opera of a comic book, lives and dies on its twists and turns and issue 156 is the epitome of that. For the creative team Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard to deliberately send the readers one way and bring them back again. Then fall back on the grass, legs kicking in the air, laughing and pointing at us.

This article will mention what that is in this particular issue. The further it goes down, the more spoilery it gets. A bit like the comic itself.

Though you should probably read the comic itself, before we discuss the implications of the various scenes.

Because this comic does away with Rick Grimes and friends. None of the original survivors or the friends, colleagues, lovers, they met along the way.

This is a "bottle episode". This is Negan meeting with Alpha and the rest of the Whisperers. The group who wear the dead as clothing, so as to walk among them. Who have little compunction not to kill. Who are proponents of might making right. And who slaughtered a bevy of Rick's people to draw a line of territory.

And in recent issues, we saw Negan use the moral uncertainty to make his escape. To slaughter the disturbed individual who granted him is freedom, in exchange for recruiting the Whisperers to attack Rick.

And made his way to the Whisperers to join them instead.

Which is where we are,

The Walking Dead 156-005
Everyone is expecting Negan and Alpha to get it on.

The Walking Dead 156-011

And the comic does lead you in that direction.

It even gives Negan a moment to show a heroic side that might break through Alpha's blank stare.

And it works, she breaks, she reveals her vulnerability to Negan.

And Negan?

The Walking Dead 156-023

He makes a present of her to Rick.

Or maybe the rest of Rick's people who are a little more vocally revenge-fuelled than Rick has been…

Is this a run for office? A head start anyway?
