Lux – When Captain Marvel Teams Up With Frankenstein

Dwayne Stewart, Patrick Cassidy, Mayra A. Dennis. Close Date: October 3rd. Publishing Date: PDF November 2015, Physical Rewards February 2016.

Elevator Pitch: Our world is in ruin. Abominations walk the streets and humanity claws for its mere existence. All hope now rests on the shoulders of a young girl and the butchered corpse that walks along-side her. Lux isn't about beating the bad guys and going home. It's about watching the world end and facing the true monsters hiding deep within ourselves and those we meet along the way.

Dwayne Stewart writes,

Our story started out as a concept. A good friend of mine and I were talking about superhero team-ups, first talking about the traditional teams and then slowly getting more and more outlandish. We then started talking about different characters teaming up with Frankenstein (I mean Batman had just done it, so why not?). Then this idea came to me: what it would be like if a light-powered character, say Captain Marvel, teamed up with Frankenstein? The more we started thinking about it, the greater the idea became. It didn't seem so silly anymore. I took that with me as I went back to my daily routine. How could we play with these concepts? Light and dark, good and evil, internally and externally. These would be perfect characters to play off of one another, the dichotomy of the team. It all started to make sense, and our basic plot was born.

Then I met Mayra. An amazingly talented artist, known for her kick-a Christmas decorations around the office. We chatted at one point about all of the projects we had started with other people in the past but had never finished. So we decided to do our own project and show all of those people what could have been. We ran with this not-so-silly little concept and created the creatures and horrible humans that would inhabit this dreadful world we were creating. One character kept drawing my attention, a middle-aged smoking woman that seemed to appear in almost all of the images. I had never mentioned anything like her; why was a random smoking woman hanging out in the background for these characters? Mayra had just decided that this woman belonged there. She reminded me of the Smoking Man from X-Files. The only difference being that this woman always seemed to be having a good time, in a very 'John Constantine' kind of way. Through the iterations, this character would become Dionysus for us, and I am so happy this accidental character even happened.

So then Pat caught wind of our venture. He came in at just the right time to help us to reign in some of the ideas and characters we were creating. He really assisted us by taking a good comic and making it great, a truly polished product. With Pat on board, these ideas and images started to take solid shape and everything started to feel cohesive. Fast forward about six months, with a lot of phone calls, Skype meetings, and emails in between, and we were ready to present Lux to the world.

So why Kickstarter? As an avid backer myself, I have been able to learn about new projects that I may not have otherwise been introduced to. We decided it would be the best platform to show off our ideas and reach a consumer that would appreciate the stories we are telling, that we may not have otherwise been able to reach.

As of this writing, we are just over 50% of our goal. I know we have a worth-while product that is nearly complete, with Mayra finishing up the last couple of pages now. The covers by Lowell Isaac (Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave, Martians, Go Home, Zone Boy) and Natasha Alterici (Kickstarter artist/writer of Heathen) are simply gorgeous. With all of us together (but mostly you, the backers) we'll finally be able to take one of the many ideas we have thrown around and turn it into a true creation.

Every physical reward backer over the Labor Day weekend will receive an exclusive mini art print free of charge for your patronage. Mayra is already hard at work creating it, and we will unveil it as soon as it is ready.
