Prepare yourself for an intense issue of The Woods, from BOOM Studios!, created and written by James Tynion IV, with art by Michael Dialynas and colors by Josan Gonzalez. The Woods #12 brings us the end of “Year One.” So far, it’s been a crazy ride, and this issue intensifies the madness of it all. Now that Adrian has seen what the future can be, and has the black stone within his grasp, he is dead set on doing whatever it takes to complete his mission. While parts of the issue deal with Sanami, calder, and the Hunters, the main focus of issue #12 is on Adrian.
Going in to this issue with the experience of Adrian’s character and how he tends to be, I don’t know why I expected anything different. Despite everything that’s happened, Issac still tries to reason with Adrian. He wants him to see things in a different light so badly, but Adrian is stubborn. As a reader, it’s frustrating to watch their interaction. You automatically feel conflicted because you know that Issac has this strong attachment, but at the same time you want to shake him and say “leave him behind, and open to your eyes to better opportunities!” Ben is this sweet constant in Issac’s life. He’s always standing in the background attempting to guide Issac in the right direction, much like Issac tries to do with Adrian. The difference is, Issac is a decent human being.
Overall, this issue is a page turner, with conflict galore! Tynion’s script continues to be captivating, and I can’t rave enough about the beauty of Dialynas’ art. Without spoiling the ending, I will say I’m a bit relieved. I think it’s time for a new chapter of The Woods to begin, and the plot has been set up for such a thing. While there was never a dull moment, I think we’ve reached the point where it’s time for something new to happen to this group of kids. While it’s certain that the after affects of what takes place will remain with them for a long time, I’m excited to explore new things in this strange world. I encourage you to pick up The Woods #12, and indulge in the brilliance of it all with me.
