THE MARVEL UNIVERSE WASN'T BUILT IN A DAY

Mark Millar makes big plans for Millarworld. Though presumably without Flash Gordon….

Stan [Lee], Jack [Kirby] and Steve [Ditko] managed to create the Marvel Universe inside two or three years and establish everything and I have the next three years planned out similarly with a number of amazing artists as my partners. What's nice is we don't have to break our backs doing 12 books a year for each title. We just do what feels natural — maybe four or six or eight-issue stories — and the whole thing is interconnected like the Marvel movies, the most popular ones maybe getting sequels if the story lends itself to it. It's actually a nice, relaxed way of working, and I've got nine new titles planned over the next three years in total.

What's the sound of 8,000 beloved comic book characters storming the globe? We're about to find out.

Marvel Comics is unveiling its programming interface (API) and developer platform in a beta version tomorrow morning, swinging wide the gates to the Marvel universe of comic heroes to fans and developers around the world. The API–which will include comic book artwork, character histories, creator insights, and expanded stories–will grant members access to an expansive database of Marvel's library of 75 years of comics, including over 30,000 comics, 7,000 series, and 5,000 creators. This move gives developers the tools to create their own Marvel-based apps and digital offerings.

RAINBOW BRIDGED

Novelist Rainbow Rowell signs a deal for two new graphic novels.

The author has signed a two-book deal with Macmillan imprint :01 First Second, with Faith Erin Hicks — the wonderful cartoonist behind Friends With Boys, The War at Ellesmere and the comic book version of The Last of Us — signed on to illustrate the first of the graphic novels.

MARCH MARCHES ON

March: Book One, has been selected as a Coretta Scott King Honor Book by the American Library Association.

Andrew Aydin, the Lewis aide, who co-wrote the book, spoke with gratitude about the honor.

"I am deeply grateful for this recognition, and for the opportunity to help John Lewis share his story with a new generation … ," Aydin tells Comic Riffs. "The enthusiastic response from readers and librarians has been overwhelming and humbling. I look forward to continuing our work bringing this important story to the page."

STAN THE STAR

Stan Lee talks about the upcoming airing of the cartoon based on his Mighty Seven comic.

As for finally being the star, Lee laughingly says it should have happened a long time ago.

Along with Lee, the 90-minute movie features seven aliens – two peace keepers and five criminals – each with a unique power: Strong Arm (Armie Hammer) has super strength; Silver Skylark (Teri Hatcher) uses her wingspan to fly; Lady Lightning (Mayim Bialik) possesses super speed; Lazer Lord (Christian Slater) hurls balls of lazer energy; Roller Man (Flea) rolls into a big ball and launches at high speed; Kid Kinergy (Sean Astin) has telekinesis; and Micro (Darren Criss) has the ability to shrink in size.

RACHEL DYING

Do you have a death wish? Then Terry Moore wants you for Rachel Rising.

Only in the wonderful world of comics is this possible. I'm asking for an otherwise perfectly sane normal person to be the next victim of a serial killer in my comic book series, Rachel Rising. If you're a fan of the book, you know Zoe, our 10-year old resident evil, has been going through victims faster than a competition eater goes through hot dogs. She's insatiable. So we need a brave and foolish volunteer to go talk to her about it in an upcoming issue, see what you can do with her. Sound good?

GET SCHOOLED

What comics do you think should be compulsory taught in schools? iO9 readers have an idea…
