Alan Moore To Read Thought For The Day On BBC Radio 4

It was partially my fault, in that I'd approached Alan Moore on behalf of the BBC's Today programme several years ago.

Lost Girls was to be published, Alan Moore's magnum opus with his new wife Melinda Gebbie, that told sexualised stories for classic children's literature. And naturally the moral guardians were outraged. Moore and Gebbie were papped by the Daily Mail. And Moore went on BBC Radio 4 in the morning for the Today programme, a weekday Radio 4 show with a reputation of setting the political agenda, to talk about the book.

They asked him if, by writing this book, the life of one child would be harmed, would it be worth it. This rather incensed Moore, he talks about wanting to ask in response if by revealing the sources of information about dodgy Iraq dossiers, if it harmed the life of one government scientist would it be worth it… but didn't. It's a line he's used a number of times since.

But his friend and collaborator Stewart Lee is one of a number of guest editors of the Today programme over the Christmas period, and it seems as if Moore has taking this opportunity to return to the belly of the beast. And on New Year's Eve, will appear on the show.

Indeed the clip below, with Alan talking about the Roman god he worships, Glycon, looks like it will air as the show's Alternative Thought For The Day, a special version of the spot usually reserved for a religious speaker.

Such a thing might beggar the mind. You can hear the clip one minute in here, and I've transcribed it below;

"Found throughout the Roman Empire, Glycon was the creation of an entrepreneur, known as Alexander the False Prophet, which is a terrible name to go into business under. A live tame boa constrictor provided the puppet's body while its artificial head had heavily lidded eyes and long blonde hair. It many ways Glycon looked a bit like Paris Hilton but perhaps more likeable and more biologically credible."

I'll be up.
