Swipe File: Frank Frazetta and Nicholas Bockelman

Swipe File: Frank Frazetta and Nicholas BockelmanMaasai Warrior- Frazetta Print

Frank Frazetta on the left, Nicholas Bockelman on the right.

Nicholas is selling his print here, entitled Massaii Warrior – Frazetta.

Jerry Deli of Litchfield comments;

This is a copyrighted image. Whatever your talents as a copyist, selling images stolen from another artist is unethical and illegal.

Tha srtist Nicolas replies;

This is not a copy. This is not Frazetta's orginal image. If you actually look at his you will see distinct differences in color hues and values.  The background is also different in subtle ways. So I dont believe that is illegal or unethical. Thank you Jerry Deli, Im glad you gave me a chance to clear that up.

Jonny Soko from Agoura adds;

Hey Nicholas. I took a look at the original and you're right there are subtle differences, but here is the thing. What you did is a copy. You know it is a copy because it is titled Maasai Warrior- Frazetta – Nicholas Bockelman. If it weren't a copy then you wouldn't be using the original title of the piece or the original artists name. I'm not saying that what you did isn't beautiful or that you're not talented. What I'm saying is, if you're going to copy other peoples work at least be honest about it.

In Swipe File we present two or more images that resemble each other to some degree. They may be homages, parodies, ironic appropriations, coincidences or works of the lightbox. We trust you, the reader, to make that judgment yourself. If you are unable to do so, please return your eyes to their maker before any further damage is done. The Swipe File doesn't judge, it's interested more in the process of creation, how work influences other work, how new work comes from old, and sometimes how the same ideas emerge simultaneously, as if their time has just come. The Swipe File was named after the advertising industry habit where writers and artist collect images and lines they admire to inspire them in their work. It was swiped from the Comic Journal who originally ran this column, as well as the now defunct Swipe Of The Week website.
