REVIEW: Guardians Of The Galaxy #2 — "Not A Bad Book At All, But It Needed More 'Oomph.'"

(Marvel Comics, creative team: Al Ewing, Juann Cabal, Federico Blee, Cory Petit)

This issue is almost as good as its predecessor, choosing vagary and the periphery of the fight with resurrected, war-hangry Olympian gods instead of the glory and spectacle of the main struggle. This choice allowed a lot of good character time, gave a weird and cryptic preview and had Hercules stagger around a little. There's an emotional but somewhat predictable story beat near the end, one that could have repercussions down the line (but with the movies still going, probably not). With the great looking art, you kind of wanted a taste of that big splashy space battle, but that's an elseworlds Roshomon take visible somewhere else in the multiverse. Not a bad book at all, but it needed more "oomph." RATING: HONORABLE MENTION.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #2
AL EWING (W) • JUANN CABAL (A) • Cover by IVAN SHAVRIN
• Peter Quill fights for his life against the King of the Gods! Rocket fights alone against the legions of Hephaeustus! Phylla-Vell makes a choice between love and duty – with death on the line!
• And somewhere, a black hole bomb ticks down to zero …
• The Guardians' first mission comes to a cataclysmic end!
