January is turning out to be a pretty good month for Awkwafina (The Farewell, Crazy Rich Asians). The same month Awkwafina became the first actress of Asian-American descent to win a Golden Globe in the “Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy” category (Lulu Wang’s The Farewell), she’s only a week away from the premiere of highly-anticipated Comedy Central series Awkwafina is Nora from Queens.
Well, the wave of good news continues, with the cable network announcing at Tuesday’s Television Critics Association (TCA) winter press event that the series has been picked up for a second season – ahead of its Wednesday, January 22, debut.
“We are in awe of Awkwafina’s creative genius on every level and we could not be more excited to embark on a season two with the entire Lin family in Awkwafina is Nora From Queens.”
– Sarah Babineau and Jonas Larsen, Co-Heads of Original Content, Comedy Central
Awkwafina Is Nora from Queen introduces viewers to Nora Lin (Awkwafina’s real name), a young woman growing up in Flushing, raised by her Dad (BD Wong) and Grandma (Lori Tan Chinn) alongside her Cousin (Bowen Yang). Nora leans on her family as she navigates life and young adulthood in outer-borough New York City.
Awkwafina, Karey Dornetto, Lucia Aniello, Teresa Hsiao, Peter Principato, and Itay Reiss of Artists First are set to executive produce Awkwafina Is Nora from Queen. Comedy Central executives Babineau and Rachel Olson will oversee production on the series for the network.
In addition to ratings success, Comedy Central receives critical acclaim from its premium scripted series, late night programming, animated series, sketch-comedy series and docu-series, including South Park, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Lights Out with David Spade, Drunk History, Tosh.0, Broad City, South Side, The Other Two, Corporate, Alternatino with Arturo Castro, among others. Additionally, Comedy Central holds talent deals with Trevor Noah, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, Anthony Jeselnik Jim Jefferies, Roy Wood Jr., Chris Distefano, and Al Madrigal.
