"Star Wars": New Footage from "The Rise of Skywalker" TV Spot

New footage was unveiled on Instagram from Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, which is set to hit theaters on December 20. The clip begins by revisiting the clip from the end of the final trailer for the movie which has Poe Dameron, played by Oscar Isaac, asking Anthony Daniels' C-3PO what he's doing, and the droid's now famously heartbreaking reply, "Taking one last look, sir, at my friends."

The Millenium Falcon then exits hyperspace above what appears, based on the color palette, to be the desert planet of Pasaana. The next shot is entirely new and shows a moment that appears to be before the part of the last trailer when Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, and Ben Solo (it hurts to call him Kylo Ren), played by Adam Driver, both destroy a base on which a large black object sits. As many concluded from the usual Zapruder-like investigation of screen shots, the object is the melted helmet of Darth Vader, last seen in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.

We're shown a few recycled shots from the first trailer of the hero group on Pasaana, and then a new shot of stormtroopers zooming by on a wide-tire motorcycle. Other shots on Pasaana come next, followed by one of Rey on a staircase that is flanked by a stone wall on one side. It's unclear where she is but a dramatic bright light illuminates the scene from above.

This is followed by the clearest shot yet of Kylo Ren's kintsugi-style repaired helmet. The red in this shot is very Sith. The final new sequence of shots seem to be taking place in the hanger of a large ship. Rey is walking alone in one of the shots while the Falcon takes off in the background. We then cut to a previously seen shot of Ben bracing against some unseen force which, given the new context, seems like it could be the hanger decompressing, perhaps due to the shield being turned off which protects the hanger from the vacuum of space. The final dramatic new shot features Rey running and launching herself against the same unseen force and over a gap, her hand outstretched, towards…something. Maybe another ship but it's hard to tell.

There are some shots that we've seen in previous trailers. To figure out what Rey is up to, we'll have to wait for December 20 when The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters.
