A New Executive Story Editor on Carnival Row Season 2?

There appears to have been a number of ructions between the first season of fairy steampunk series Carnival Row starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne on Amazon Prime and it’s much-anticipated second. Erik Oleson of Daredevil has come on board as executive producer and new showrunner and will succeed season one showrunner Marc Guggenheim, of the Arrowvers. He maintains a consultancy role on the show. Also leaving Carnival Row is Travis Beacham, who wrote the Black List screenplay A Killing on Carnival Row, on which the series was based. Deadline cites creative differences. He will also retain executive producer credit.

But Bleeding Cool has also heard the word is that another change is Laurie Penny is to be a new executive story editor on the show.

Better known in the UK as a political columnist, author and activist,  the Daily Telegraph once called her ‘without doubt the loudest and most controversial female voice on the radical left.’ But recently she moved to Hollywood to write for Joss Whedon‘s upcoming HBO show The Nevers, then for the second season of Netflix show, The Haunting. We talked to her about the whole experience earlier in the year.

Which seems to have gone so well that Amazon Prime has lined her up for Carnival Row, which films in Eastern Europe. She’s not commenting for now.

Carnival Row is set in a Victorian fantasy world of mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. Bloom plays human detective, Rycroft Philostrate, while Delevingne stars as a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss. In Season 1, they rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society and Vignette harbours a secret that endangers Philo’s world during his most important case yet: a string of gruesome murders threatening the uneasy peace of the Row.

And while it may be full of fairies, don’t expect any Manic Pixie Dream Girls…
