Joaquin Phoenix in “Joker” is Bookie’s Favourite to Be First Oscar Win For a Comic Book Movie Lead

Heath Ledger won an Oscar for playing The Joker in Dark Knight, but that was a Best Supporting Role. To date no actor has won an Oscar for playing the lead in a comic book-inspired movie. But today the bookmaker Betway has placed Joaquin Phoenix as theri favourite to win the Oscar for Best Actor for playing the same role in Joker with odds of 4/6 .

He joins Renee Zellweger at evens to win the Best Actress Oscar for playing Judy Garland in the movie Judy, 17 years after she won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Cold Mountain.

Joker itself is sharing the 7/2 odds with The Irishman to win the Best Picture Oscar.

Betway’s Alan Alger said: “Renee Zellweger is probably best known for Bridget Jones, but it’s her performance in Judy which has got the critics talking. We make her just even-money to win the Best Actress award at next year’s Oscars and in doing so claiming the second Academy Award of her career. The Best Actor category has an even more standout candidate, though, with Joaquin Phoenix just 4/6 to win an Oscar for his portrayal of the Joker. The film has earnt impressive reviews, not least because of Phoenix’s acting, and we make the Todd Phillips thriller the 7/2 co-favourite to win the Best Picture award alongside The Irishman.”
