ComiXology Bestseller List, 28th July 2019 – The Wicked + The Divine House Of Action

Welcome to the ComiXology Bestseller list, your guide to see how well your favorite titles are selling digitally. Every week I'll post the ranking of every new title, plus a ranking of the best selling volumes & graphic novels. As always, I hope you find it interesting and informative.

It took some doing. They had to offer him a gigantic salary, a corner office, a company car, stock options, a baked potato bar and three Infinity Stones, but they did it. Marvel has lured Jonathan Hickman back. (They would've offered him Thor's hammer as well, but apparently, Chris Claremont is the only worthy enough to lift it.)

And the gambit has paid off: House of X has debuted at No. 1 on the Digital Best Seller List, only the third Marvel title to do so since this column began. Now one the other two was the finale for War of the Realms. Fantastic Four #1 was the first to do so last year, and while it's still a Top 10 title, it lost its position a month later and never regained the crown. So now the pressure is on Hickman to live up to these high expectations.

But what if he does live up those expectations and starts delivering more No. 1's? Well then it's a whole new ballgame. Granted, I do want to see how well Hickman's X-books does against Batman and Justice League before making crazy proclamations, but Marvel should be happy. This is a big win and another step towards being on par with DC.

But speaking of big wins, how well did the companies do overall in the Top 10? Let's see:

• DC: 26
• Marvel: 21
• Image: 8

Very close this week, but Superman and two Batman books are hard to beat, even for the Hick Man. Though I'm surprised to see that Sean Murphy's Batman: White Knight followup, Curse of the White Knight, only managed to debut at No. 6. Seems slightly under expectations considering how well the original did. Oh well…

And let's all give a round of applause to Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie's The Wicked + The Divine. In its penultimate issue, it's hit No. 3, higher than it's ever gone. Very few indie comics climb up to these heights, so Gillen and McKelvie should be very proud of what they have achieved.

But with The Walking Dead, The Wicked + The Divine, Paper Girls, Black Science, Sex Criminals and East of West ending (and with Saga still on indefinite hiatus), this will be a very trying time for Image. So where will the next big indie hit come from? Stayed tuned and find out…
