"The Orville": Seth MacFarlane's Hit Sci-Fi Series Sets Course for SDCC 2019
Fresh off their season three renewal, FOX's The Orville is looking to celebrate back on Earth at one of pop culture's biggest gatherings. Disney Television Studios announced that Seth MacFarlane's hit science fiction comedy-drama will be heading to this month's San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) for a panel presentation. Joining MacFarlane from the bridge of the U.S.S. Orville are Adrianne Palicki Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Jessica Szohr, J Lee, Mark Jackson, and Chad L. Coleman. Joining the cast on stage in Ballroom 20 will be executive producers David A. Goodman, Jon Cassar, and Brannon Braga, where they'll take a look back at the second season with never-before-seen moments – and yes, there will be a sneak peek at season three.
Disney TV Studios has The Orville's panel set for Saturday, July 20, running from 2:30 p.m. – 3:15 p.m., following the presentations of other FOX TV shows – with The Simpsons at noon, followed by MacFarlane's two animated hits American Dad! and Family Guy from 1-2:15 p.m.
The Orville is coming from a strong action-packed second season. The crew's dealing with the increasingly hostile Mocclus as relations are starting to reach a boiling point internally within the Planetary Union, and their membership potentially being called into question despite being the alliance's primary resource for defense. The crew also have to deal with the ongoing peace process with their once-sworn enemy in the Krill and the ominous threat of the Kaylon – an AI species determined to annihilate all biological life in the galaxy.
While much of the show's success is due to the influence of the minds behind Star Trek, how can The Orville build on its momentum heading into a third season? Should there be a greater emphasis on standalone episodes of exploration, mystery and the supernatural? Should it do more to take on more contemporary social issues within the diverse life of its universe? The third season of FOX's The Orville has the potential to forge its own future – and it sounds like fans are going to find out very soon where that future lies.
